身土不二Shindofuni…in Buddhist, it’s pronounced as “Shindofuni” but it’s generally pronounced as “Shindofuji”. Its meaning is that eating the foods which are grown in your local area where you’ve grown up is good for your body. I think that we can agree with this, can’t we? However the original meaning was that our body and the earth were the same and this was written in Buddhist scriptures. It’s said that Yukikazu Sakurazawa who started the macrobiotic diet also had described that it was based on the Lotus Sutra.
By the way, what does it mean that our “body” and the “earth” is the same…?
First of all, as for the word of “不二 (fuji)”, I can explain that it means “only one / not the second”.
Well, 富士山 (Mt. Fuji) which everyone knows in Japan was originally called “不二山 (fuji-san)” according to the old literature. I agree with it as I can say that the mountain is the “only one / not the second”. So, the word of “身土不二Shindofuni” certainly means that our body and the earth aren’t separated but only one, doesn’t it? It follows the Buddhist scriptures. It was originally made from only one thing…
Come to think of it, we often see the special topics and articles about “regeneration medicine” which is about “embryonic stem cell (ES cell)” and “induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS cell)” in newspapers and on TV shows. This ES cell is also called a versatile cell and because it has the possibility of organ reconstruction, it’s been attracting public attention throughout the world. The research has been done all over the world, too. In Japan, Shinya Yamanaka Professor who is a head of Center for iPS Cells Research and Application at Kyoto University Research Divisions Dept. of Reprogramming Science is famous worldwide.
One cell constructs various organs. Originally it was one thing (a cell) and was changed into various things (organs). It’s interesting, isn’t it? When the science and technology improves, many things become clear. But in contrast, the things we wonder about increases, too. Maybe, the human (body) and earth (ground) was made from one thing (an element)?... I know that it’s said that the living organism was created from the ocean (earth). So it may be correct.
People who are superior in sensory organs, I think, could experience something from the above mentioned. Maybe…because those origins were the same, so they must’ve realized that we should’ve taken care of the earth well, as caring the earth is the same thing as caring for people. It looks like it’s not connecting directly with each other, but it’s actually connected where they are out of our sight…. So what was really meant was the importance of the true bond, maybe.
